We are looking for Academy Councillors to join our teams.  You don't need to be a parent at one of our Academies to make a difference to young people's lives.  We'd like to see new members with a professional background in finance, human resources, project management or construction.

You'll receive:

• Full training (including safeguarding)
• A chance to join a diverse and motivated team

Case study: Martyn Hinam

As the local leisure centre manager, Martyn had strong local connections that he could put to use as an Academy Councillor at Soundwell Academy.  He responded to a local appeal for community members to get involved with their new local school and hasn’t looked back.

In his first year as an Academy Councillor he’s received all the relevant training and has been able to share his expertise in health and safety and finance to contribute to the launch of the new academy.

He said:

"This has been a good experience to help our community and use my skills and local knowledge to help others. For me, it's really important to boost opportunities for the next generation and I think my advice on some of the challenges the school may face offer a fresh perspective to consider in the team."

Case study: Alison Cade

By becoming an Academy Councillor at KnowleDGE Academy Alison Cade wanted to use her years of experience as a foster carer to benefit children at the school.    

She enjoyed it so much that even though she no longer has children at school she’s joined Soundwell Academy Council.  Soundwell is one of the newest Academy's at Learn@ Multi-Academy Trust and Alison has the opportunity to influence the school’s infrastructure and operation.

“When I was a councillor at Knowle, I could speak for parents and students, especially those who are in care.  For example, for plans for a ‘wear what you want’ day I could articulate how much anxiety that might create for some students and subsequent stress for families.  I could also remind staff about the amount of professional people who might be in a child’s life when even small decisions are being made about their education.

“I got involved to help keep families and children at the heart of all academy decisions.  We’re a great team and I believe the mix of backgrounds really helps to contribute to a structure that has room for different voices who bring their own expertise.”
